The Political Money Pot

I have to laugh at the outrage I find in the mainstream media about the amount of money, both corporate and union, that is being thrown into the midterm political elections.

Loudly proclaiming their self-righteous disgust at this state of affairs, meaning the piling up of filthy lucre to buy advertising time on television, cyberspace and print, indignant columnists, editorial writers and commentators have loosed a barrage of angry rhetoric against such practices.

Why Give NPR a Dime?

The firing of Juan Williams by NPR reinforces my opinion that NPR is a far left, out of the main stream, rigidly biased, elitist, self-righteous broadcast enterprise that represents all that is wrong with American media.

Juan Williams is an outspoken media analyst and personality that never fails to speak his mind on any subject. He is a regular contributor on the Fox network and he is often at odds with his fellow panelists and a passionate defender of President Obama. He often argues vigorously with his colleagues.

Racial Seating?

In an article recently published in the New York Times, John Edgar Wideman, a respected African-American writer observed that white people on a commuter train would invariably avoid sitting next to him because he was a black man.

As a New Yorker who travels extensively on subways, buses and trains, I found this observation astonishing. It is impossible for one riding on a New York subway train or bus to contemplate such a situation. I would venture to say that the variation of skin tones is the least important factor in choosing who one sits next to on a public conveyance. The available seat is the principal criteria.

The Last Good Christmas

This will probably be the last good Christmas for the big box bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Borders and many of the book chains that one encounters in major airports.

I say this with a sincere sense of regret and sadness. The love of books, both as a writer, a reader and a collector has dominated my life. As a young man my greatest joy was to browse through bookstores, especially those second hand bookstores that once lined the streets not far from New York University, my alma mater, where I now teach novel writing.
