In Warren's Words

Thoughts on the Death of Norman Mailer

The day I was drafted in January 1951 during the Korean War, I was bussed up to Fort Devens in Massachusetts from downtown Manhattan. Somewhat disoriented by the process and having said goodbye to my teary-eyed parents in their Brooklyn apartment, I brought along a copy of The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer to accompany me on the journey...To a young man whose only ambition was to write novels, the Mailer debut four years earlier was the prime example of instant literary success that we wannabe aspirants burned to achieve...In Mailer's day, novelists were towering figures, genuine celebrities. They were canonized in the mass media and a major force in a world where novels were considered highly valued. See complete story.

Publishing News

Overlook Press Announces March 2008 Pub Date for Funny Boys

The Overlook Press will publish Funny Boys, Warren Adler's newest novel, in March 2008. A dark comedy of errors about success, the mob, and true love, Funny Boys chronicles the adventures of a budding young comedian in a Catskill Mountain, "Borscht Belt" resort where, circa 1937, the era's gangsters, dubbed Murder Inc., stash their wives, children, and girlfriends for the summer. Grim, sexy, violent, authentic, and hilarious, this story of love and danger stirs tears of nostalgia for a lost era and immerses the reader in a pulse-quickening, unforgettable narrative.

Banquet Before Dawn

After serving his Brooklyn district for years, Congressman Sullivan discovers that his once comfortable Irish American majority has given way to a diverse district of blacks and Hispanics. Challenged by a more liberal opponent, he tries everything possible to maintain his seat only to painfully learn that he and his views are outdated and irrelevant to today's world. But he doesn't bow out of the race gracefully, and the fierce ensuing campaign brings new insights to the meaning of democracy and the terrors of a swiftly changing world. If, as it is said, all politics are local, this compelling story transcends politics and puts a human face on how the American democratic system really operates. Unforgettable characters and a powerful plot offer a remarkable and tense story of how tragic endings affect new beginnings. Read the first chapter of Banquet Before Dawn free now!
