This was an incredible article. As a volunteer with an online writers workshop, the majority of which are writers that began online and continue to write online, this not only spells almost eerie change to such a timeless adventure (books, bound literature, etc.), but also a chance for writers that begin online to publish online and achieve success. Illuminating; thank you for providing such a succinct analysis.

Instead of spending hundreds on a Kindle, why didn't you just invest the $5 that it takes to buy a simple EZ-Book-Clip? They work fine and alleviate the problem you just mentioned...

I am a lifelong reader who wore out her left thumb from holding paperbacks open. Arthritis was making reading very painful, then came the Kindle. Now I do "curl up with my Kindle and read a good ebook." Last count was 27 this year with several being very, very good. There are a few authors I will buy HB signed first editions of but most books I will never read a second time so ebooks keep my 2nd floor apartment from becoming a ground floor. Long live my Kindle.

Astak, maker of two lines of eBook Readers, is launching an eBook Store. I am looking for more content. I presently have 200,000 pay eBooks and the entire Google Library. I am open to independent publishers for eBooks. This site will be PDF and EPUB. We are looking for niche publishers in several fields such as Environmental, eBook Industry, Romance/Erotica, etc. The eBooks must be in the aforementioned formats and be professionally written. English is top choice. Of particular interest are eBooks in Mandarin or Spanish. I am not looking for poorly written or formatted eBooks. This is a professional site that will be going global!

That is true, Sandre. However, it seems like our print niche seems to be filling with large numbers of half-talented writers, resulting in overflowing bookstores that are selling little of any quality. At the same time, that deluge of people who fill our niche with books creates a daunting wall for those of us who care about quality. In the meantime, large stores seem to be content lining their stores with board games, coffee shops and whatever trendy nonfiction happens to be "in" at the moment...

I think there is still a viable market for hard copy as well as electronic publishing. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but the phrase, "Curl up with my Kindle and read a good eBook" just doesn't appeal to me. LOL. I think the idea of one-off reading, a novel, for example, is probably right for electronic media. But I wonder about the brave new world where a generation of parents will cuddle with their children while "viewing" a book. The hard copy book, for me, is part of the rite and ritual, part of my compact with the writer. I suppose it's true that a generation who never lived before cable television and the invention of the internet will have no problem adjusting to simply a visual representation of a book but I think there is still room for niche marketing at this point.

I am an admitted literary snob, and I abhor the lack of quality of many who become self published because either they do not understand or do not wish to try to learn what it takes to become published by a first-rate publisher.

I also think that many second- and third-rate publishers are just more pages of mediocrity.

Personally, I take a long time to finish a manuscript only because my own standards are difficult for moi to satisfy. I am frequently shocked when I read what others consider publishable.

I think video trailers, multi media can enhance interest a book creates - without detracting from the print experience.

Social networking sites can help authors who have a good brand name and who are willing to do the work to create and maintain connections, etc.

Though many complain about how difficult it is to get published these days, they do not realize that they would never, ever be published even 20 years ago, not to mention 40 and 60 years ago.

I am a print person who embraces the probability of a world barely touched upon as yet, though with some trepidation, as Print is my medium.

As an aspiring writer who is writing several books and preparing to enter the world of the novelist, your number 8 is a daunting paragraph. A flood of absolute dreck, written by those who have absolutely no concept of creativity, all hoping their book will bring them fame and fortune... it's a nightmarish scenario, whether for print or electronic means.
