The War of the Roses

TYPE
  • Movie
GENRE

There’s a war coming to Broadway—but don’t expect to see dueling Yorks and Lancasters.

Instead, this War of the Roses will see Warren Adler adapting his own 1981 novel, a black comedy that follows an affluent couple (yes, their last name is Rose) as they embark on a contentious divorce. The book was adapted into a movie in 1989, starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito, who also directed the film. (It marked the trio’s third time working together, after 1984’s Romancing the Stone and its 1985 sequel The Jewel of the Nile.)

Adler, also the author of Random HeartsThe Sunset GangPrivate Lives, and Funny Boys, has released 33 novels total and is also a playwright with the stage versions of WindmillsLibido, and Dead in the Water under his belt. Tony-winning veterans Jay Gutterman, Cindy Gutterman, Cathy Chernoff, Carl Moellenberg, and Wendy Federman will produce the Broadway version of Roses. Further details about casting, the show’s creative team, its theatrical home, and its opening date have not yet been announced.

“How I Stayed True to My Family When My Career Took Off” Featured on FATHERLY

Having reached the overripe age of ninety, I often wonder how my sons truly rate me as a dad. Did my dear wife and I do the right things in nurturing them, raising them, guiding them? Did they truly believe we were always there for them, rooting for them, understanding their ambitions and dreams? Above all, did […]

Our Exclusive Interview with Lynn Norris, The Audiobook Narrator of ‘The Casanova Embrace’

We’re shining a spotlight on Lynn Norris, the multi-talented audiobook narrator of Warren Adler’s highly-charged political thriller The Casanova Embrace. What do you look for in a project? My Salute to English Teachers

Happy #TeacherAppreciationDay! In 1949 when I was twenty-one years old I took a creative writing course at the New School in Manhattan taught by Professor Don M. Wolfe. He had been my freshman English teacher at New York University, where I graduated in 1947, just two months shy of my twentieth birthday. Dr. Wolfe assigned […]

A Reflection on Hemingway’s Wayward Leopard

“Kilimanjaro is a snow covered mountain 19,710 feet high and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai ‘Ngaje Ngbi’, the House of God. Close to its summit there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude.” -“The Snows […]

My Salute to Librarians

Happy #NationalLibraryWeek! From the moment I entered the hushed, sacred precinct of the Brownsville Children’s Library in Brownsville, Brooklyn, back in the mid-1930s, I have been a passionate advocate of the public library. My most profoundly joyous memory is walking through the crowded, noisy, aroma-filled atmosphere of Sutter Avenue, between rows of pushcarts selling anything edible […]
