poetry from warren adler

Gone

Soon my generation will be swept away

And we will have had our say

Will we have left a better place

Or just a lot of empty space?

Did we do any good

To foster universal brotherhood?

It doesn’t look that way from here

But then we’re looking at the rear

Okay then let’s look ahead

To ground we will never tread

A dark fog seems coming on

And soon we will all be gone

Leaving others to bear and cope

To prevent fear and foster hope

Perhaps they will reverse the trend

If they can make it to their end

It’s not that I do not care

I can only leave them with a prayer

And wish them well to carry on

The truth is I’ll be dead and gone
